Live bed bugs are excellent at hiding during the day, so they are rarely seen. They will venture out only for a short time in the middle of the night to get a quick meal. This makes it hard for people to figure out if they have bed bugs or not. Fortunately, bed bugs leave behind signs that can help make their presence known. One of those signs is their droppings.
Bed bug poop is composed of partially digested blood and usually appears as very dark rust colored or black dots. These spots of excrement are only about the size of a dot from a marker and may also bleed into sheets and bedding, much like a marker.
Bed bug droppings can be found anywhere bed bugs live or feed, but the easiest places to check are on the bed itself. Carefully inspect the mattress and box spring for these small black dots. Pay special attention to the seams and piping of the mattresses. Next check the sheets and other bedding. If you have a large infestation, droppings may be present on many other things like furniture, baseboards, carpet, and upholstery.
