Many people believe that roaches only infest homes that are dirty and not well taken care of. This thought can create a negative social stigma toward those that find themselves with roaches. If you are diligent about cleaning, but discover roaches in your home, you are not alone. Roaches can be found in all kinds of homes with all levels of cleanliness. Here are some reasons why your clean home may still be attracting roaches.
Moisture
Roaches love dark, damp environments. Excess moisture in homes is one of the biggest attractants for roaches. This is why bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, and under refrigerators are some of the most common hiding places for roaches. To help combat this, get rid of as much excess moisture as possible by fixing leaky pipes and faucets and using a dehumidifier if necessary.
Alternate Food Sources
It is fairly common knowledge that roaches will feast on crumbs and food scraps, but it might surprise you to find out that roaches eat much more than traditional food sources. This means that no matter how clean your home is, roaches will likely find something they like to eat. These alternate food sources may include things like: cardboard, wall paper paste, leather, hair, and soap. This makes it important to not only store all food properly, but also to make sure your home is decluttered.
Outside Landscaping
If your outside landscaping is attracting cockroaches, they will likely find a way to enter your home, regardless of if it is clean. To prevent roaches in your yard, try the following:
- Seal the Exterior of your home
- Get rid of standing water
- Keep compost heaps and wood piles as far from your home as possible
- Keep your trash cans clean
- Remove pet food and water at night
- Trim grass and vegetation
Location
Some locations are just going to be more susceptible to roaches than others. Climates that are warm and humid tend to have more roaches. If you live in an apartment building, condo, or duplex, you may also have more trouble with roaches because your neighbors may have them. This can be a hard, frustrating situation, but there are things you can do to help. Make sure all openings, cracks, and gaps to your home are sealed. You can also do regular pest control treatments to keep on top of them.
