Pest Control Tips for the New Year

Happy New Year from PF Harris! While turning the calendar is exciting in many ways, it shouldn’t be a time for you to let your guard down. Pests don’t keep track of time like we do, and they won’t stop being a nuisance just because you’re celebrating the arrival of 2022.

While you’re enjoying the festivities with family, keep these New Year pest control tips in mind. Just a few simple steps will set you up for success in the never-ending war against pests that will continue in the following year:

Take Note of Problem Areas

Start the year off by surveying your property. All you need to do is inspect areas of your home that you might not check on regularly. This will include places like the basement, attic, perimeter, and garage.

You should be able to spot potential problem areas before pests even inhabit them. For example, if you notice that your attic is a lot more humid than the rest of your home, this might be a more likely place for certain pests to appear. With this knowledge, you can now make decisions that reduce your risk of pests there, such as adding a dehumidifier to the space or remembering to check up there more often.

Spruce Up the Yard

Any pests that enter your yard will first establish themselves in your yard, with the exception of any insects that hitch a ride on your clothes or belongings after spending time outside. Regardless, maintaining your yard is one of the best things you can do this year to keep pests at bay.

There are certain circumstances that will invite more pests than normal. A rotting wood pile left over from the winter can quickly become a feeding ground or hiding place, for example. Keeping the lawn trim will give pests fewer hiding places from predators such as birds.

Spring Clean and Stay Clean

Spring cleaning will come soon after the turn of the year, or quite frankly whenever you can make time for it. After tending to your yard, you should give your home a good deep clean to clear out anything leftover from 2021 that might be attracting pests.

When was the last time you cleaned under the oven or behind the refrigerator? Places like these that don’t get cleaned often could be riddled with food bits and scraps that pests will come chasing after all year. It’s especially important to clean now after tons of holiday desserts and dishes have likely left crumbs from left to right.

Stock Up on Supplies

Last but not least, make sure you’re equipped for any pest control problem you might face throughout the year. You never know what sort of problems you’ll run into, and you never want to be left without an option. Better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Pest control products can be stored for long periods of time as long as the conditions are right. A cool, dry space in your shed could hold plenty of bug sprays and pellets that might come in handy down the road. You don’t have to wait until you see the first wasp of the year before you go and buy wasp spray.
