Prevent wasps from entering your home by keeping doors and windows closed or screened. Regular inspection for new wasp nests under construction around your home is the best way to prevent a large and potentially dangerous nest from being built.

 

One of the most common types of wasps is the Paper Wasp, with many different species variations. They tend to be around 2-3 cm in length and have a narrow dark brown body with black wings and yellow markings on the abdomen. Nests are originated in spring by one or more queens. Cloudy and rainy weather at this time will limit the number of new nests formed and queens may share a nest. These nests tend to develop quickly and are often large.

A new nest is often built next to the queen’s original nest, and the result may be a large number of new and used nests in one site. This wasp preys on caterpillars and also feeds on honeydew and bruised fruits. Queens from nests along house soffits often will seek shelter indoors for the winter and become active in late fall and spring.
